Charging Structure

At Pleass Thomson we pride ourselves on the fact that we do not pay referral fees to anyone for any work, relying solely on our reputation, built over 30 years of providing excellent service at a reasonable price with no "hidden extras" If you are looking for the cheapest service then now is the time to look elsewhere. However, if you do look elsewhere, you will find that we are very competitive.

As with most things in life, no two sets of circumstances are identical and there may be times when it becomes clear midway through a transaction that a considerable amount of additional work is required. If this should be the case, we will notify you immediately, explain the issues and obtain your agreement before incurring additional costs.

Our basic pricing structure (updated with effect from 1st April 2019) is as follows:-

For transactions involving property valued in excess of £1 million, please contact us for an individual quotation.

All prices are subject to the addition of VAT at the prevailing rate - currently 20%.

In addition, we charge £30 plus vat (£6) for every electronic funds transfer that is required. For example, to transfer purchase funds on the day of completion, to repay a mortgage or to forward the balance of any monies due to you.

There will also be various disbursements and taxes involved, depending on the nature of the transaction. Please contact us to discuss your individual circumstances and we will gladly provide a complete costing for you. Once instructed, this will be confirmed by way of a Client Care Letter before we incur any expenditure on your behalf.


PROBATE
The period following the death of a loved one is obviously very difficult for all family and friends. The task of administering an Estate and finalising someone's financial affairs can be both complicated and upsetting.

At Pleass Thomson, we can offer assistance at three levels:

If you are able to provide us with full details of the assets and any liabilities of the Estate, we can complete the necessary paperwork to obtain a Grant of Probate or Letters of Administration to enable you to collect the assets and to distribute them in accordance with the Will (or under the rules of intestacy if there is no Will).

As long as there is no Inheritance Tax liability our fee for this service is £600 + vat.

If you would like us to advise all the relevant institutions, obtain valuations and balances of< the assets and liabilities, complete the paperwork in order to obtain the Grant of Probate and thereafter to collect the assets and distribute them in a accordance with the Will then our fees (once again, as long as there is no Inheritance Tax liability) are:-


For Estates with a gross value of up to £250,000

£1,500 - £2,500 + vat

For Estates with a gross value of £250,000 to £500,000

£2,500 - £5,000 +vat

For Estates with a gross value of over £500,000

1% of the Estate value + vat


In the case of larger Estates, it may be that having taken into account the Inheritance Tax nil rate band, currently £325,000, any transferrable nil rate band of up to a further £325,000 plus, if applicable, the residence nil rate band of £150,000 (with effect from 5th April 2019) and any transferable nil rate band of up to the same amount, Inheritance Tax is still due. If this is the case, then our charges for completing the administration as set out above with the additional work involved in calculating and arranging settlement of any tax and dealing with HMRC queries then our fees are:-


For Estates with a gross value of £325,000 to £500,000

£3,000 - £6,000 + vat

For Estates with a gross value of £500,000 to £1,000,000

£5,000 - £9,000 + vat

For Estates with a gross value of over £1,000,000

1% of the Estate value + vat

 

In addition to our fees, Probate Registry fees will also apply. For Grant applications made by solicitors, their fee is currently £155 plus sap for each additional sealed copy of the Grant.

There is however legislation awaiting the approval of Parliament which proposes to increase this fee significantly on a sliding scale from the current level up to £6,000 for Estates of more than £2 million.

No two Estates are exactly alike and, once we have met with you and established the amount and nature of the work involved, we will provide you with a detailed quotation to include our fees, and any likely disbursements, in our Client Care Letter.


WILLS
We strongly recommend that everyone should have an up to date, valid Will.

Our charge for providing a Will questionnaire, meeting with you to discuss your affairs, providing you with a draft document for your approval preparing the final document, witnessing your signature, providing you with a copy and storing the original Will free of charge are:-


For a single Will

£150 + vat £30 = £180

For joint Wills

£250 + vat £50 = £300


 

If you simply wish to make minor amendments to your existing Wilt it may be possible that this can be achieved by means of a Codicil for which we charge £90 + vat £18 = £108.

We are also members of the Cancer Research UK Free Will Scheme which is available to the over 55's, whereby Cancer Research will fund the cost of your Will in the hope that you will leave a legacy to their charity in your Will.


LASTING POWERS OF ATTORNEY
It is becoming increasingly important that you have a trusted person appointed as your attorney. If you need someone to assist you with your finances and your health and welfare then you will need both types of Lasting Power of Attorney.

Our charges for meeting with you to establish your requirements and explain the nature and effect of each document, preparing, signing and witnessing the application forms, submission to the Court of Protection for registration, if applicable, are:-



For an individual

 

Single LPA (either Financial or Health and Welfare)

£390 + vat £78 = £468

Both LPA's

£590 + vat £118 + £708

For a couple

 

2 x single LPA

£500 + vat £100 = £600

2 x both LPA's £900

£900 + vat £180 = £1,080


In addition, there is a Court Fee for registration, currently £82 per LPA.

We will if you wish, store the original documents free of charge and provide you with certified copies to enable them to be registered with individual institutions.
